Zing and Zang

  • For this project, we had to design baby food packaging using a random fruit and veggie. While everyone else got cute, kid-friendly picks like strawberries and apples, I got stuck with broccoli and a jalapeño. I instantly doubted myself. How do you make that work for babies without scaring off parents?

The packaging I chose looked great until I had to actually cut it out. Don’t be fooled, I was struggling insanely with the layout. Text was either too big or too small, nothing felt right. Eventually, I created two little characters, Zing and Zang, to represent the broccoli and jalapeño, and that helped pull it together.

Then the night before the draft was due, the art building printer ran out of paper. I was up until 2 or 3 a.m. making last-minute edits, woke up at 9 to print at the campus center, and cut everything out—plus another project—until 11. It doesn't sound too bad, right?

Wrong. It was chaos. But I made it to class just in time, and to my surprise, my peers and professor loved it. I still kind of suck at the production side, but the more I do it, the better I’ll get and this project turned out to be one of my best.
