I was given a typography project inspired by Stefan Sagmeister with the theme "Comparison is the thief of joy." My challenge was to approach it as boldly as Sagmeister does. Each word in my project has its own unique vibe, and I’ll explain them all.
COMPARISON was painted on my back by my boyfriend but I gave him a general idea of what I wanted. I did it on my back because people often compare their bodies to others, so it made sense to me.
IS was weird. I wanted to make it look like it was in a keyboard setting. It is a bit darker than I would like it but I made the “keycaps” out of paper and electrical tape ,so I think with the strong words, it has an abstract feeling to it.
THE is an image of my local Chicken Express’s sign. I simply just took a picture of it and photoshopped the original words off to spell out “the”. Since I am always there, it made sense for me to incorporate them somehow.
THIEF is my favorite. I asked my parents if I could spray paint our fence in the backyard and they were okay with it. I spent over $70 on spray paint because the wood kept absorbing my paint , but overall I am extremely happy with how it turned out.
OF was done from a vinyl I found at our local thrift store. I have never seen a red vinyl in person, so I took advantage, I cut out the word “of” with a dremel tool and had help from my boyfriend to photograph the sky. I think it looks nice, especially the contrast with the vinyl and sky.
JOY was my strongest one in my opinion. When I thought of the word joy, I instantly thought of a smile. I wrapped some wire and hooked it onto my teeth and had help photographing the angle. I originally wanted the wire to be connected to both my top and bottom mouth , but I didn’t want to risk hurting myself.
